Ghana has come a long way in its quest to decentralize its system - TopicsExpress

Ghana has come a long way in its quest to decentralize its system of governance. Indeed my few years experience as an assembly member has given me some insight into how the local government system works in Ghana and I can confess that this system if not the best , is among the top ten best in the world. This notwithstanding the begging question is has Ghana seen any remarkable improvement in areas such infrastructure development and good sanitation at the local? The answer definitely will be subjective since it will depend solely on how one puts on his or her political spectacle even though at the local level party politics is not supposed to be played. In my candid opinion however I think the answer is a big NO because after 18 years of decentralization a cursory look at our environment across the country one can only conclude that there is a spectacular failure when its comes to sanitation and infrastructure development and this gives a clear signal that our local government system even though touted as one of the best it is in fact not working as expected. Ghana is seen by many especially at the international level as a middle income country and by that measure the onus lie on us as assembly members to contribute our quota by making sure that we do not shirk responsibilities and endeavor to serve as check on all contracts awarded so that the right thing is done at all times.
