Thanks for all the amazing support for my efforts on behalf of The Barth Syndrome Foundation at Ironman-Lanzarote. The swim was wonderful, as there were volcanic rock formations just beneath us, teeming with fish. The bike ride was absolutely brutal-even more so than expected because of high winds. It turns out that, on Lanzarote, an aero bike with aero wheels is actually a hang-glider. Numerous harrowing episodes on the descents, combined with the sheer difficulty of the course topography, took their toll on me, and I withdrew from the race after the ride. Although it did not end the way I had hoped, it was an amazing adventure, and I hope to return next year-in better shape and with the right bike-to try again.
