Gianni Rage MARAT/ROBESPIERRE ...There is a VAST difference. Marat was a fraud and a parasite. His only authentic moments were rooted in malice and the rush of predation. He had spent the years prior to 1789 crawlingly flattering aristocrats, conning them with quack medicine, making himself rather wealthy. He then rode the Revolutionary tsunami, making himself powerful by hurling the rabid plebeian mob against his former patrons. In his newspaper he used the type of ferocious, crude, lewd and inflammatory invective that would not be seen again until the 20th Century (Ann Coulter would be a twelfth-generation descendent of sorts)...Robespierre, by contrast, was a true ideologue and fanatic. He was not motivated at all by petty malice, personal ambition, sadism, bloodlust etc. He cut down all enemies of the Revolution with the same icy, surgical precision; Even his Jacobin colleagues were not exempt. In the end he actually alienated (or liquidated) every tenable power base and fell. That vast grave that he had dug for so many others had room for one more corpse. But to this day he is still known by historians as Lincorrubtible : The Incorruptible. Of course, to us average humans with basic appetites, desires and emotions, this probably makes Robespierre even MORE of an incomprehensible monster than the shifty Marat.
