Gift for crew of Te Kukupa Tue 2 Jul Australia’s Defence advisor will be making a special presentation to the crew that work aboard police patrol boat Te Kukupa this week following self-defence and boarding practice training exercises. Maritime surveillance officer, Commander Tony Grubb, says Australian Defence advisor to the Cook Islands, Captain Stephanie Moles, on a routine visit here, will be presenting $40,000 of new safety equipment to the patrol boat boarding party and boat crew on Thursday. The equipment being handed over will include life jackets, safety helmets, stab vests, evidence cameras, radios and others tools – purchased through the Pacific Patrol Boat Programme Australia he said. Grubb says the equipment will be a welcome addition to the resources the Te Kukupa crew have at their disposal for operations. “It is quite some contribution,” he said. The special presentation will follow a commissioner’s parade that starts at around 8.20am that will go for around an hour incorporating guest speeches. More information on this, will be provided by the police in the coming days he said. On Monday, Grubb says special field training exercises for Te Kukupa’s crew began. He says the training, happening up until Thursday with Australian expert, chief petty officer, Clayton Rowe, is both theory and practical-based, and was being done on shore and on the patrol boat alongside the wharf. Today, the crew are involved in self-defence training in an undisclosed location, and on Wednesday will be training on Te Kukupa alongside the wharf. Grubb says this training will be to practice safe methods for boarding that can be done from the wharf rather than needing to take the patrol boat out on the water. cinews.co.ck
