Gila monster venom is fairly potent, but the delivery system is - TopicsExpress

Gila monster venom is fairly potent, but the delivery system is poor when compared to the advanced hypodermic injection system found in rattlesnakes, for example. Gila monsters (Heloderma suspectum) have to administer their venom via relatively short, grooved teeth. The venom is released from modified salivary glands and trickles down the grooves into a bite wound. Therefore the Gila monster must bite hard and latch onto its prey or any aggressor and cling to the victim for quite some time in order for the venom to be injected. This fact has caused many a thoughtless person (frequently drunk young men) to underestimate how dangerous these innocuous-looking, fairly slow-moving lizards are. Once a Gila monster bites you, they are very difficult to dislodge without serious tissue trauma in addition to the venom itself. Therefore the best policy is, imagine this, not to handle them! Admire these handsome lizards from a safe distance without touching them.
