Gilbert Insurance Agency Contributes to Hunger Relief Program Arbella Insurance Foundation’s “Let’s Drive Out Hunger” Initiative Now in its Sixth Year READING, MA – November 25, 2013 – Gilbert Insurance Agency today announced that it has donated money to the Reading Food Pantry; 6 Salem Street Reading MA, as part of the Arbella Insurance Foundation’s “Let’s Drive Out Hunger” program. Now in its sixth year, Let’s Drive Out Hunger aims to alleviate the increasingly prevalent issue of food insecurity in New England. Arbella’s Foundation collects contributions from any of the Arbella Insurance Group’s nearly 500 independent agents, and matches each donation on a two-to-one basis, up to $500 per agency. Over the past five years, the Arbella Insurance Foundation and independent agents have contributed more than $422,000 to more than 500 emergency food programs, soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters and food banks throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. “In the aftermath of the recession, families in our community continue to struggle with food insecurity. Food pantries and shelters here in Reading, and across the state are increasingly important resources and are in dire need of donations,” said Mark Gilbert, President for Gilbert Insurance Agency. “We are proud to contribute to this important effort to end hunger, and to assist Reading Food Pantry in their outstanding service to our community.” According to Project Bread, approximately 750,000 Massachusetts residents struggle to feed themselves and their families. As families in New England continue to feel the impact of the recession, area food assistance programs have to meet increased demand. The USDA reports that in 2012, 5.1 percent of all U.S. households accessed emergency food from a food pantry or soup kitchen one or more times. The rate of food insecurity in Massachusetts was 11.9 percent in 2011 (the latest study for which data are available) – 43 percent higher than it was when the recession began in 2008. “Hunger is a major issue in New England and one that Arbella’s Foundation is especially dedicated to alleviating,” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group and chairman and president of Arbella’s Foundation. “Our agents have feet on the ground in their communities so they know where the needs of their neighbors’ really lie. We are proud to partner with them to support food assistance programs on such a local level.” About Gilbert Insurance Agency Gilbert Insurance Agency is a one-stop shop for your insurance needs.
