Gill & Gill’ A visual essay exploring humanitys relationship with stone by juxtaposing two masters: one of rock climbing, the other of letter cutting. The film looks at the way these two seemingly very different practices, united by a common material, share basic principles such as creativity, discipline, dedication, muscle memory and balance. Through this unusual comparison we can come to better understand the artistry in both crafts, and in so doing reflect on humanitys relationship with the material world. Eric Gill and John Gill, the two fathers of letter cutting and bouldering respectively, become the focal point of the film’s narrative; and their relationship is depicted through two contemporary masters of their craft: Lucy Creamer, the most accomplished female climber in Britain and Richard Kindersley, the pre-eminent letter cutter and maker of standing stones.
