Gina Leggio, Community Mental Health Supervisor, recently helped a client attend a special summer camp for kids with diabetes. This was made possible through the Optimist Special Needs Fund, which is designed to enable clients to participate in extracurricular activities, have orthodontic work done, to provide clothing and other necessities for recently emancipated youth, as well as many other needs. The Los Angeles Optimist Club provides the bulk of support for this fund. Ginas client, who had never stayed away from home overnight due to having diabetes, said the experience changed her life. Her mom cried with joy as she has observed her daughters new, positive outlook. The camp made her feel normal since everyone there, including the camp director and counselors, had diabetes. There were classes to educate the kids about their disease (i.e. how to have a safe pregnancy later in life) and support group sessions were held around the campfire (as well as the usual fun camp activities). Thank you for sharing, Gina!
