Girls Basketball McGill-Toolen fourth-quarter rally gives Yellow Jackets 39-38 win over Faith Academy! MOBILE, Alabama - Sophomore guard Lauren McKee had 15 points and freshman guard Shauntai Battle added 10 as McGill-Toolen roared back in the final three minutes to upend Faith Academy 39-38 in the championship game of the McGill-Toolen Tip Off Classic. The win marked the second straight year that McGill (5-0) won its own tournament. Faith actually led 35-31 with 3:14 left to play after a 3-pointer by 8th grader Destiny Ramos, but McGill went on an 8-0 burst to open up a 39-35 advantage with only eight seconds remaining. McKee had a field goal and two free throws to lead the way in the offensive explosion. 8th grader Khylie Rankins had a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final margin of victory. Rankins ended the night with a game-high 17 points for the Rams, while senior Angel Carthen had 11. I thought our team was very composed in the final minutes, McGill coach Carla Berry said. Our kids kept believing that there was enough time to execute the offense and enough time for the defense to get the stops that they needed to get. Berry said she cautioned her team to stay in control at the end. I just told them to maintain their poise, she said. I told them we didnt have to win the game in one possession and we werent going to lose the game in one possession. We just had to make the most of each of the possessions that we had, though. We had been making good shots. Meanwhile, the Rams (4-1) made some critical turnovers at the end that helped McGill get the triumph. The turnovers hurt us, said Faith coach Woodie Head. Our youth showed up tonight. We had two eighth-graders starting along with a sophomore, a junior and a senior on the floor. Our kids played hard though and they never quit. We still have a long way to go offensively but defensively, I thought that we played a pretty good ballgame. I was pleased with our progress so far. Our impatience hurt us down the stretch tonight though.
