Give us two weeks to register, Delta community begs INEC By Festus Ahon ASABA—THE people of Ayokoromo Federated Community, comprising of Ayakoromo mainland with over 35 towns and villages, Newtown, Bubougbene, Akparemogbene, Ekoro, ward 7 in Burutu Local Government Area, Delta State, have cried out over what they described as disenfranchisement in the last voters registration exercise, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to give them two weeks to enable them register. The people, in a letter to INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said: “We, on behalf of ourselves and the good people of Ayakoromo Federated Community, which is politically known as Ngbilebiri 1, ward 7, in Burutu Local Government Area, comprising Ayakoromo mainland with over 35 towns/villages, including Newtown, Bubougbene , Akparemogbene, Ekoro, Egologbene, Esiemogbene, Oyangbene, Ebeingbene, as you are aware, on December 1, 2010 about 2p.m., came under attack by men of the Joint Task Force, JTF, who claim to have done so under a purported order to arrest a former militant, John Togo and his group, who were suspected to be hiding in the Ayakoromo area. “The military action made many people lose their dear ones and others fled the community for the safety of their lives and became refuges in neighboring communities within and outside Delta State, thereby making the 2011 voter’s registration exercise in ward 7 a fiasco. Over 80 percent of the qualified people were afraid to come out for the voter registration exercise because of the military presence in the community then.”
