Give weightage to students on BCom LLB merit list: HC to PU Express news service : Chandigarh With the Panjab University (PU) failing to provide a satisfactory reply to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the court directed the university and University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) to provide weightage to students in the merit list of BCom LLB (Hons) five-year integrated course, as it provided to the students seeking admissions to BCom course. While allowing the petitions seeking quashing of eligibility criteria for admissions to the above mentioned course, as it was contrary to the criteria framed for admissions to BCom course, the Bench of Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain said, “When the petitioners had made a representation to them (PU and UILS) in this regard on July 19, then why has it not been decided till date.” In the merit list, the respondents have not granted additional four credits per subject that is subject to maximum 16, as they are entitled to if they get admitted to BCom, as per the university rules. Also, quoting the 29th paragraph of the prospectus, the court said that if in any case there was a conflict in the prospectus on the one hand and university rules on the other, then the latter shall prevail. “Rules and Regulations as enshrined on the PU calender or the general guidelines for admission/hand book issued by the university should have precedence over the prospectus,” the court said. “Since it has been mentioned in the PU calender, weightage has to be given for the purpose of admission to BCom,” court added. Postponed till further orders In view of the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, PU has postponed the counselling for admission to BA/BCom LLB (Hons) five- year integrated course. The counselling for University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Chandigarh, Panjab University Regional Centre (PURC), Ludhiana, and PURC, Hoshiarpur, was scheduled for July 25 and 26.
