Glad we got a chance to see Lady Day on Broadway last night. From the moment Audra McDonald sauntered onto the stage, she WAS Billie Holiday. From beginning to end, McDonald delivered a stirring performance. The most powerful moment for me came as she performed Strange Fruit. I closed my eyes, listened intently, and imagined what it must have been like to hear the real Billie Holiday sing the song live for the very first time – at a time when white lynch mobs hung black people from tree limbs for the slightest infraction – or no infraction at all. Lady Days voice was so rich, so rare, so thick with emotion. Loved the show that told the story of one of her final performances.
