Glancing at the copy of PW that arrived this morning, I noticed - TopicsExpress

Glancing at the copy of PW that arrived this morning, I noticed the fiction bestseller list ending last week. The Top Ten were: Patterson, Grisham, Baldacci, King, George Martin, Picoult, Cornwell, Connelly, Mary Higgins Clark and Evanovich. One, it shows how very hard it is to crack into the Top Ten these days, but more so, it is a virtual snapshot, with one or two explainable exceptions, of how that list might have looked ten years ago, a gloomy statement on the advancement of fresh talent today, which is definitely out there. With all respect due them, are these still the best mystery/thriller writers producing their best work? Could this possibly happen in music? Or film? Or wine? Or even food/chefs? What is it about this one segment that is so resistant to change?
