Glasgow 2014: Test run for Athletes Village A test run of the facilities at the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village has been carried out. About 200 invited guests spent a night in the purpose-built accommodation in Dalmarnock. They toured the site, tried out the catering services and slept in beds which could soon be used by the likes of Mo Farah and possibly Usain Bolt. The village was put in lockdown last week with tight security measures now in place ahead of the Games. About 6,500 athletes and team officials will stay in the Athletes Village during the 11 days of sporting competition. Glasgow 2014 said it was not possible to fully test the village but that the event taking place on Friday into Saturday would allow a trial of some of the services available. A spokeswoman added: The village isnt just a bed for an athlete, its a dining area, a medical facility, a retail zone and a recreational space, a quiet sanctuary where athletes can relax and unwind away from the intensity of competition and training. After the Commonwealth Games work will begin on a retro-fit to convert the athletes accommodation into a community of 700 family homes and flats. It is hoped the first permanent residents will be able to move in from December. Courtesy of the BBC
