Glenda could be as strong as Milenyo By Dharel Placido, ABS-CBNnews Posted at 07/15/2014 10:28 AM | Updated as of 07/15/2014 11:08 AM MANILA– A state weather forecaster on Tuesday warned that typhoon Glenda could become as strong as typhoon Milenyo, which ravaged Metro Manila in 2006. Speaking to dzMM, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Gladys Saludes said Glenda (international name Rammasun) and Milenyo (international name Xangsane) share similarities. Saludes noted the two typhoons share almost the same track. Masasabi natin na in terms of tracking, katulad ng Milenyo ay dadaan ito ng Metro Manila at nasa typhoon category rin. In its latest weather bulletin, PAGASA said Glenda was spotted 270 kilometers east of Legazpi City, Albay as of 4 a.m. PAGASA said the typhoon is expected to make landfall in Albay-Sorsogon area on Tuesday evening. Saludes said this landfall may occur between 6 p.m and 8 p.m. She said the typhoon may intensify further before making landfall. PAGASA said Glenda is expected to move towards Southern Luzon after making landfall, be within the vicinity of Metro Manila on Wednesday morning, and then exit the Philippine landmass later in the afternoon. Milenyos 10-minute sustained winds peaked at 140 kilometers per hour. Its strong winds and rains destroyed structures, uprooted large trees, and claimed over 200 lives. PAGASA said Glenda was already packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kph with gusts of 150 kph. PAGASA said residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under signals no. 3 and 2 are alerted against possible floods and landslides. Those living in coastal areas under signals no. 3 and 2 are alerted against storm surges.
