Glinda - Just skipped the doggy slammer, spill the beans Prof - TopicsExpress

Glinda - Just skipped the doggy slammer, spill the beans Prof Jerry, why do these humans keep wiping their hands all over me. Professor Jerry - It’s called petting, and it’s the way they show love and affection. Normally we respond to such gestures by wagging our tails and looking lovingly into their eyes with unwavering loyalty. I would also like to mention that you might reflect this attention by not peeing and pooping on the floor. Training to Lead - Most of the dogs we work are two or three time losers, (meaning they’ve been returned to the shelter once or twice) and come from the shelter misbehaving and lacking manners. Many times the only attention these dogs have received is negative attention, which from the dog’s point of view is better that no attention at all. Therefore, misbehaving satisfies the needs of the dog, creating more bad behaviors. This becomes a viscous cycle until one day the owners can’t deal with the behavior anymore and choose to abandon the dog. Our first objective at TTL is to break the cycle while tolerating the misdirected behavior. We break the cycle by lavishing praise for positive behavior and ignoring or disrupting the unfavorable behavior. With time, the unwanted behavior will dissipate, being replaced with positive interactions. We’ve also found that integrating the shelter dogs with the dogs we’ve raised from pups provides a pack mentality. The older, stable dogs, help guide and develop the young dogs attitude. As with all dog training, this takes patience, practice, and lots of praise.
