Global Rule Of Law Index 2014 - Sri Lanka beats India on six fronts While ‘systematic breakdown of rule of law’ has become one of the main allegations against Sri Lanka at the 25th session of the UNHRC, Sri Lanka is positioned as the South Asian country with the best record in the Rule of Law Index 2014 prepared by the World Justice Program. Sri Lanka has topped the rule of law iist in South Asia obtaining the 48th rank leaving behind Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. India is ranked at the 66th position just below Nepal and above Bangladesh.Sri Lanka has surpassed India in several other categories too such as absence of corruption, fundamental rights, order and security, civil justice and criminal justice In terms of absence of corruption, Sri Lanka’s global rank is 39th while India’s is 73rd. When it comes to fundamental rights, Sri Lanka is at the 56th position while India has only managed to obtain the 63th rank. In the ‘Order and Security’ category, India is 39 ranks below Sri Lanka and under the ‘Civil Justice’ category Sri Lanka has moved 10 ranks up surpassing India. Sri Lanka’s global civil justice rank is a lowly 80 but India is worse at 90. In terms of ‘Criminal Justice’, Sri Lanka’s rank is 38 while India is positioned 48th.The global index measured 99 countries based on eight categories which include crime, government accountability, corruption, basic rights, security and access to justice and order.Out of 99 countries surveyed, Denmark was ranked as the best country in the world where the rule of law is concerned.
