Glover Crowned Masters Champion By Daniel Mole Tipton’s Lee Glover was crowned British Masters Featherweight Champion on Saturday evening after an intriguing contest with Plymouth’s Chris Adaway. The fight was a worthy top-of-the-bill for Black Country Boxing at Walsall Town Hall as Glover, an English Title Challenger at super featherweight, took on his much less experienced opponent over eight rounds. It looked like being an easy nights work for Glover as Adaway went down from an innocuous looking right-hand in the opening round. However, the 21 year-old proved what a tough cookie he was by taking Glover the distance in a fight that mirrored the ebb and flow of Billy Joe Saunders versus Chris Eubank Jr at the Excel Arena that same night. Like Billy Joe, Glover was the favourite and, like the Champion Traveller, it was he who looked in total control in the early rounds. However, like Eubank, Adaway seemed to grow in to the contest and began to believe in himself the longer the fight wore on. This one wasn’t as close though. Glover dumped Adaway onto the canvas three times in all and threw in a couple of low blows for good measure. It was a real ‘welcome to the pro ranks’ for Adaway in only his second professional contest. Glover’s superior power and ring nous were evident throughout and he deserved victory as referee Shaun Messer scored the contest 77-71 in Glover’s favour. Adaway took the plaudits though for a spirited display so early in his professional career. “It was a tough fight but I think my strength and maturity showed in the end,” Glover said afterwards. “I was trying to rough him up, that was the tactic, but he just kept on coming. I take my hat off to him, to be honest, he came for a war and had nothing to lose.” “You never lose, it’s always a lesson,” Adaway said afterwards. “I’ve come to Lee’s area and pushed him all the way. He’s only lost twice, against top fighters, so I’ve got to be pleased with what I did in there.” Halesowen super middleweight prospect, Lennox Clarke, got valuable ring time under his belt as he went the distance with awkward Welshman, Jamie Ambler. Clarke was battling against nasty head cold and the bout was reduced from six rounds to four. Ambler used all his experience to smother the prospect, obviously wary of the raw power the exciting prospect possesses. Clarke often went hunting for the big shot and never truly relaxed into the fight. However, victory was rightly his as he recorded a shut-out points win. Elsewhere on the undercard, there was double joy for super featherweight duo Ryan Corrigan and Sean Davies. Coseley’s Corrigan defeated Sheffield’s Qasim Hussain 40-37 whilst Birmingham’s Davis opened the show with a shut out points win over Northern Ireland’s Ben Mulligan. Finally, Coventry cruiserweight, Joe Sherriff, defeated Lincoln’s Mitch Mitchell 39-37 in a close-fought bout. Next up for Black Country Boxing is the ‘Christmas Cracker’ show at the Queens Theatre, Burslem, on Saturday, 6th December. Topping the bill is undefeated Midlands duo Joshua McLaren and Luke Paddock. The pair, from Stoke and Walsall respectively, go toe-to-toe for the vacant Midlands Area Light Welterweight Title. Tickets are priced at £30, £40 or £50 Ringside and are available by calling 07913 861 718.
