Go Emma! I remember having a conversation with my mom about feminism about 4 years ago. At that time I had feminist ideals but, as Emma said, it is commonly associated with man hating which I recognized and strongly disagreed with. I told my self-indentifying feminist mom that I did not consider myself a feminist which had to be fairly shocking. I continued by saying I did not want to be labeled as someone who was identified as hateful towards ANY gender. I noticed the inequalities which men as well as women suffer from and while womens lack of basic human rights are more obvious and arguably more pressing matters I only thought it fair that men be included as well. It seemed to me that the gender discussion had become too polarized. The alienation of other genders will only lead to further challenges in true gender equality which Emma communicated perfectly. Since that conversation 4 years ago I have become more fully versed in feminist theory and while I am still cautious about my use of the term feminism, because of its odd social stigma, I can now say I absolutely identify myself as one.
