Research evidence support claims that group singing lower’s stress, relieves anxiety and raises endorphin levels. It turns out that singing is like a “perfect tranquilizer”! The simple act of belting out a few tunes soothes the nervous system and elevates mood. Some preliminary studies also suggest that during group singing heart rates actually “sync up” and this may explain the enhanced feelings of trust, bonding and reduction in feelings of depression and loneliness. Some evolutionary theorists also claim that human language evolved purely due to the pleasurable social activity of singing. Apparently early man felt the huge benefits and rewards over coming together cooperatively rather than hiding out, afraid and alone in their caves. You don’t even have to sound good to reap the benefits! A study done in 2005 found that group singing produces satisfying and therapeutic sensations” even when the voice is of “mediocre” quality.
