Go see Selma. If you lived through those times, itll make you angry, itll make you cry, and it will stir your soul. If you are young, and it all seems like the distant past, it will pull you in and let you experience Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement in a way that lives and breathes. Director Ava DuVernay does an extraordinary job of making this all work. David Oyelowo is an outstanding King and leads an excellent ensemble cast. I think this New York Times review gets it right. In praise, I would only add: the soundtrack. John Legend and Common deliver a strong new song, Glory, and the old songs -- civil rights songs and R&B music of the mid-Sixties -- are right on track. nytimes/2014/12/25/arts/in-selma-king-is-just-one-of-the-heroes.html?_r=0 I have caveats -- as with any historical movie. But overall DuVernay deserves enormous credit for finding an effective way to tell this one particular story, while hinting about all the broader aspects and debates of the movement. For those who want more, there are so many fantastic books and documentaries, starting with the epic PBS series, Eyes on the Prize.
