Go simologile ko Palamenteng KHAMA VS UDC ROUND 1 - Fresh from an election in which the new opposition formation The Umbrella for Democratic Change and the Botswana Congress Party put a total of 20 MPs into Parliament, President Ian Khama has kicked off a new fight with the opposition. In an act seen as an attempt by the Executive to arm twist the Legislature, the President has threatened The Speaker Margaret Nasha with a law suit if she keeps the electiong of the Vice President nominee. Parliament is scheduled to vote for the Vice President tomorrow in a secret ballot, but the President demands that it be held by show of hands, a method that might intimidate BDP MPs into falling into line. This suggests perhaps that the President may make an unpopular nomination, a nominee which the President cannot count on even BDP MPs to freely endorse. Hanging above this scenario is the fact that if Parliament rejects his VP nominee the President has a right to dissolve Parliament and call a fresh election. The UDC lawyer led by Dick Bayford are said to have intercepted the letter to Nasha and are now threatening their own legal war over the voting method, arguing that the Parliament is entitled to determine its own methods of conducting business
