God Confidence It is not that we think we can do anything of lasting value by ourselves. Our only power and success come from God. 2 Corinthians 3:5 If anyone might have felt adequate or qualified, it was the apostle Paul. With his impressive credentials and the breadth of his ministry and influence, he could have come up with a lot to be confident about. But he states in this verse that his adequacy and competency didn’t come from his own human resources but from God’s. He knew that God was his only source of power and authority. Nothing worthwhile came from Paul himself. God alone made him adequate as a servant of the new covenant. Are you feeling inadequate today? Is there a task or responsibility that is weighing heavily on you? This verse is a call to dependency filled with hope. God has ordained our dependence on him. He designed us to function best with him, not apart from him. Those challenges and assignments that are beyond our abilities and make us feel inadequate aren’t intended to make us fear but rather to drive us to the Lord who is adequate so that we will develop a God-confidence that cannot be shaken. LORD, thank you for the areas in which I feel inadequate or struggle, because those draw me to you. I am able to accomplish what you ask of me only through your power. Thank you for your Word because in it I learn that you are my adequacy! You are my sufficiency! May my confidence always be in you through Christ Jesus. Then you will receive praise. It is not my ability, but my response to God’s ability, that counts. Corrie ten Boom (1892–1983) The One Year Bible
