God, What Are You Up To? M. Jantzen Share this Devo on Facebook and Twitter: God, what are You up to? powertochange/blogposts/2013/09/27/god-what-are-you-up-to/ #LifeDevo “On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home.” (Acts 16:13-15a) Prayer includes paying attention to what God is doing around us: “God, what are You up to in this coffee shop? How can I express Your love to the guy in the cubicle beside me? Who’s heart are You preparing me to speak to on this hockey team?” This kind of prayer creates in us the anticipation that God is going to use us in amazing ways, which, by the way, He is thrilled to do! Living like this isn’t mystical spirituality reserved for the spiritually elite. We have the same Spirit living in us that directed Paul and company that day. Their plan was to find a peaceful place by the river to pray, but God had something else in mind. A group of woman had already gathered there, but this was no inconvenience; Paul and his colleagues were quick to join what God was already doing. It became their delight to be used by God to help Lydia and her entire household become followers of Jesus that day. What would happen if you woke up every morning expecting God to invite you in to the amazing work He has already prepared for you to be a part of? Lord, you are always at work, but I’m often not paying attention. I look forward to how you’re going to use me today to reach out to someone. Open my eyes to see what you’re up to and give me the courage to partner with you. Amen. Action Step Today, every time you enter a new social setting, pray this prayer: “God, what are you up to?” Then get ready to join God in reaching out to someone. For an even bigger challenge, do this all week.
