God forgives us freely and repeatedly. But we can’t play games with God. All of us know what it’s like to ask God to forgive us and we didn’t really mean it. It’s like the man who prayed, “Lord forgive me for committing fornication last night – and forgive me when I do it again tomorrow.” You can’t play games with God. God will forgive you repeatedly, but to overcome the shame and regret you have to stop doing the things that lead to shame and regret. When you sin and repent, sin and repent, sin and repent, then you become numb to God’s forgiveness. You start to justify your sin. You begin to tell yourself, “Maybe this isn’t wrong. It’s not such a bad thing.” But friend, you can’t take fire to your bosom and not be burned. Deep in your heart you know it’s wrong. And God wants to help you change your patterns so that you can overcome and be free from shame and regret.
