God gave me two incredible gifts--my Mom and Dad. My father was Bartolo Enriquez Tovar who was born in Zacatecas ,Mexico and lived out the Mexican Revolution, came to the United States as a young teenager whose older brother taught him how to read and write. My dad worked in the mines of Arizona and the railroads in New Mexico. During the Depression he would work in any type of job as long as it was honest work, that is how he taught us the ethics of hard work. My father NEVER spanked or hit any of his children instead he would sit with that child and made him/her to reason why we had done wrong--sometime that was more hard than if he had phyically punished us but he would correct us, always, in a loving way. We respected and loved him dearly because he sacrified so much for his wife and children especially when he almost died when we were children. He was my first history teacher who taught me about the history of Mexico and the US. He taught me to be proud of my language and my Mexican heritage and my rights as a citizen of this Country. He taught me to love social-economic justice. He strongly believed in the Dignity of the Human Being. Since he witness the Mexican Revolution and its cruelty he was cautious about institutions-the old and the new YET my Dad was an optimist. My Dad had a sense of humor and people liked him-- the young kids in the neighorhood loved. Above all I will remember him for his expressed love and sacrfice for his children. Te amo querido PAPA!
