God gave us a conscience to know right from wrong and to know that He exists. The Bible says that “the truth about God is known to us instinctively because God has put this knowledge into our hearts,” (Rom. 1:19). Even a child knows when he or she has done wrong. Our conscience is like a navigation device within us. This device helps guide us into decisions that protect us from harm. Sadly, many people ignore their conscience. Over time, the Bible says it becomes seared as by a hot iron (1 Tim. 4:2). The only way to “unsear” our conscience is by turning away from our sin and disobedience to God and asking for His forgiveness. Even as believers, being quick to repent for disobedience is key to maintaining a tender conscience.
