God gives For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding… Proverbs 2:6 (NKJV) Yesterday we looked at our responsibility to humbly seek out God’s wisdom. Today, we’ll follow-up with His willingness to give it. The Lord is always giving. He gives rain to the earth (Job 5:10). He gives food to the animals (Psalm 147:9). He gives us rest from our enemies (Deuteronomy 12:10). He gives sleep to His beloved (Psalm 127:2). He gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). He gives breath to all mankind (Acts 17:25). And He even gave His Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). Giving is an inseparable part of who God is. It extends to virtually every aspect of His being. So it should come as no surprise when we read in Proverbs 2:6 that “the Lord gives wisdom.” This is absolutely consistent with God’s overall nature, and we can count on His willingness to dispense the wisdom we need with fixed and absolute certainty. It’s not a “hit or miss” scenario. Here’s how the Apostle James puts it: If you need wisdom—if you want to know what God wants you to do—ask him, and he will gladly tell you. (James 1:5 NLT) Notice that God doesn’t give wisdom begrudgingly but gladly. If you’re a parent, you appreciate it when your children turn to you for advice. You want to help them out and give them the advantage of knowing what you’ve learned in life. So imagine the joy it gives our Heavenly Father (who knows all there is to know) when we ask Him to share His wisdom with us. Sometimes, our willingness to seek out God’s wisdom is determined by our perception of how willing He is to give it. Let us be convinced of this beyond any doubt: God delights in giving wisdom to all who pursue it. Think About It…What does this passage reveal to me about God?
