God in our Time and Space Part I. By Dr. Noah Manyika When Paul and his entourage arrived in Thessalonica and Athens in Acts 17, they found a people who were being very Greek. They had devised ways of worship according to their culture, including inscribing on one of their altars: To an Unknown God. God had appointed their time and space in history not so they could worship Him the Greek way, but so they would “seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.” (v.27) It is important that even in our time and space today we must live in Him, move in Him, and have our being because we are His offspring (v. 28.) It is the fact that we are His children by the new birth that should determine how we worship, and not our cultures. And by the way, He is not far from any of us even in our frenetic time and crowded space. We are not in this time and space by accident, but by divine appointment. We must stop pining for the times gone by when God seemed more real and it was easier to know Him. He is as real today as He ever was, and can be found by those who seek Him as He has promised (Jeremiah 29:13.) He is present in our world and still speaks to us through the words of Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” He speaks those words to our time and space so that we too can boldly say “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (v.6) He (Jesus Christ) is after all, and according to verse 8, still “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” The same God who was present in the time and space of the Children of Israel as they took possession of the Promised Land is present also in ours.
