God is Love Many things have been said and written about love. Numerous songs recount stories of love—gained, treasured and lost. Tennyson wrote that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Each one of us has been given a tremendous ability to love. Why? Because we were created by God, and He is love (1 John 4:16). His love is the greatest. It is an eternal love—one that is unconditional—not based on what we do or don’t do. Instead, the love of God is based on one event, and that is what Christ did for us on Calvary’s Cross. No matter what has happened in this life or what you will face in the future, God’s love for you will never fail. When you get up in the morning, God’s love embraces you. When you lie down at night, it is the love of God that is standing guard over your life. Throughout the day, God is pouring out His merciful love toward you. So great is the love of God that Paul chooses to mention it first when writing about the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). If we truly want to be people who love others and love God fully, then we must begin by giving Christ our lives and by asking Him to teach us how to love the way He loves us. Love is a choice that many times we cannot make on our own. People will say hurtful words about us. Some will seek to harm us, and yet the love of God has the ability to cover all sin. Nothing is more powerful than God’s love in our lives. “Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2).
