God is love. 1 John 4:8 (NIV) Just imagine what it does to God’s heart when people challenge His character by asking, “How could a loving God create such an evil world?” Have you ever had someone question your character? Maybe it was an employer who didn’t give you the benefit of the doubt. Or perhaps someone saw you doing something from afar, assumed the worst, and then got the rumor mill going. It’s very painful when we discover that our integrity has been called into question. So just imagine what it does to God’s heart when people challenge His character by asking, “How could a loving God create such an evil world?” In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1), but He didn’t create the world in the evil condition as we now know it. Satan then tempted Adam and Eve to use their God-given will to disobey. As a result, the entire creation was corrupted by their sin (Genesis 3:1–6). Ever since, the earth has been an evil place and man has paid dearly for what he has done to himself. God didn’t create the mess that we’re in today, and He’s done everything needed (with the exception of violating our will) to save us from our situation. He gave His Son to die for our sins, He sent the His Spirit to guide us, and He has prepared a place in heaven for those who have placed their trust in His character.
