God is merciful and will forgive those persons who approach Him in a state of true contrition. Sin enslaves us to our own pride. When we renounce our pride and realize that without God we are nothing and that we are wholly dependent on God, we realize that we cannot pretend to stand on our own merits, no matter how meritorious they might seem in our own eyes. The greatest folly is to approach God as an equal and think that we can make terms with God. No oath of man has validity before God. All that has validity is to acknowledge that we are the servants of God and that we should desire nothing more than the wages of such servitude, wages of which are more than wholly adequate for everything one needs in life.
