God is the subject of Life. He is foundational for living. If we do not have a sense of the primacy of God, we will never get it right, get life right or get our lives right. Not God as an option, at the margin or at weekends but God at centre and circumference; God first and last. Genesis pulls us into a sense of reality that is God-shaped and God-filled. It gives us a vocabulary for speaking accurately and comprehensively about our lives; where we come from and where we are going, what we think and what we do, the people we live with and how to get along with them. Everything we think, do and feel is material in a building operation in which we are engaged all our life long. There is immense significance in everything that we do. Our speech, actions and prayers are all involved in this building operation, known as the kingdom of God, but the foundation is not ours to build. It is given. The foundation is firmly in place. There are 2ways to go about our lives- we can either build on sand or build on the rock. No matter how beautiful your structure; if we build on sand, it will all fall to pieces like a house of cards. We can also build on what is there already, THE ROCK. Genesis is a verbal witness to that ROCK; Gods creative acts, Gods intervening and gracious judgments, Gods call to a life of faith and God making a covenant. Genesis is not an abstract, bloodless truth or principle. It is a reality. It is fact. God does not work impersonally from space. He works with us where we are as He finds us. No matter what we do, either good or bad; we continue to be a part of everything that he is doing. No one can drop out. There is no place to drop out to This is the beginning. I am taking my place in the story; at the beginning.
