God, it seems, has ordained work to be our destiny, both here and hereafter. What was His reason for planning our lives this way? I think we see the answer when we note what happens as we work. We discover our potential as craftsman, learning to do things and developing skills, which is fascinating. We also discover the potential of Gods world as raw material for us to use, manage, and bring into shape, which is fascinating too. Work as a way of life that we approve, embrace, and pursue for the glory of God generates within us a spirit of praise to Him, both for the wonders of creation outside us and for the creativity that our work draws out of us. Furthermore, work brings joy in the experience of making and managing; fosters wisdom and maturity in the way we run things, including our relationships with other people; leads to an increase of affection and goodwill toward others as we harness our skills to serve them; and develops ingenuity and resourcefulness in finding ways to tap into the powers and processes that surround us.
