God of All Comfort, Before you rescued me from the realm of darkness, I only had one self. It was created in your image and lived in a marvelous body in which I could carry myself around wherever I chose to go. Since I was just one individual, I was the center of my universe. Everything revolved around me. From the time I was born you gave me characteristics, temperaments and physical attributes that equipped me for survival in my environment. You gave me a wonderful set of parents, great teachers, friends and many other things that made up my safety network. However, this awesome gift you gave me also became my biggest enemy. You gave me the freedom to choose what I wanted to do with my time and my life. I was not looking at life from your perspective; I was viewing everything with the question, “What’s in it for me?” I was making a shipwreck of my life because of the stupid choices I was making. I can never thank you enough for sending one of your servants into my life. Through him you revealed yourself as a loving, benevolent God. After many conversations about you and your kingdom, he led me to the place where I was “born again.” Suddenly, I had a new self that was created, not just in your image, but in the body of your son, Jesus Christ. Although I am just a very small part of it, I belong to the corporate organism that is eternal. I began to discover that everything about my new self was the opposite of my old self. Where I had been the center of my universe, you became the center. Your plans began to be my plans. Your desires started becoming my desires. I am increasingly giving up all of the cares I used to have and the burden of them is vanishing. I still have trouble with my old self because he has not changed. No matter how many times I tell him that he died, he lets me know that he’s still very much alive. However, the joy I experience from knowing you is making the reality of his ugly personality less and less powerful in my life. Thanks for giving me my new self in Christ.
