Gods speed to the great Joe Cocker. Heres a fantastic performance of Up Where We Belong, a song for which he & Jennifer Warnes earned an Oscar. Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote this with her then husband Jack Nitzsche, & Will Jennings. Buffy & Jack attended my church at the time. She even wrote an article in our church publication once. She told my then Pastor, Dr Gene Scott, that she wrote this song about a significant event that involved our church. Its still performed in our church occasionally using the original lyrics Lord lift us up where we belong. For the movie soundtrack, she substituted Love for Lord, in a similar manner to how U2 uses Love. As great as this song & Jennifer Warnes are, without Joe Cockers unique style, I doubt that it wouldve made the impact it did.
