God’s Men on God’s Duty “I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on behalf of the sons of Israel, so that there will be no plague among the sons of Israel by their coming near to the sanctuary.” (Numbers 8:19, NASB95) The Levites stood between the people and their God in order that “there will be no plague among the sons of Israel.” In 1 Samuel 6:19 50,070 men died of a plague because “they had looked unto the ark of the Lord.” Had the Levites been doing their service, not one of these men would have died. The Levites were to care for the Ark, and would have had it properly covered according to the Lord’s command. While there is no modern day equivalent of the Levitical priest, the New Testament Pastor can invite or block God’s punishment on a nation. There is serious duty for the one who is God-chosen to handle His Word, just as in the Old Testament there was serious duty to the Levite who was chosen to handle His Ark. Sadly, today as in ancient days, God’s men are not always on God’s duty. Many modern ministers are content with sharing “sermonettes for Christianettes” because they don’t want the trouble of studying God’s Word and presenting its hard truths. When God’s Word is taught in precision and fullness, it diminishes the crowd rather than grows it. Pastors are so set on church growth that they give the people what they want: a watered-down, psyched-up sermon. And the plague will come.
