Going into my spring semester as a freshman at USC, Symphonic/Concert/University bands chair placements were being finalized. I was walking by the band office at the School of Music and Mr. Copenhaver stops me and says.Mr. Aiken, I noticed your name isnt on any of the performing ensemble rosters I explained to him that I had a section of English 102 that met at the same time as rehearsals and I wanted that SPECIFIC professor. He kinda glared, paused and said How can you be a music major and not be playing your instrument? He goes to his office and magically pulls up my schedule and listing of every section of English 102 and is about to rearrange my schedule. I beg him nicely not to change it..he agrees and says I expect you to be in an ensemble from here on out. First of all, I didnt know he knew my name..I wasnt a star performer. Secondly, his attention to the little things to make you feel apart of a big family, the Carolina Family, is what I truly thank him for. Bless you sir!
