Going on a backpacking camp out this week-end with the Boy Scouts - TopicsExpress

Going on a backpacking camp out this week-end with the Boy Scouts along the Manistee River in Mesick, MI. Well hike with everything - tents, sleeping bags, cookware, food etc - in our backpacks. Saturdays high will be 32. The low will be 3. Snow? Will probably be 2-3 feet. Well get there Friday evening and set up camp by flashlight. Pack up Sat morning and hike 5 to 10 miles depending on conditions and set up camp. Sunday morning, break camp, hike back to the vehicles and drive home. To some its a weird way to have fun. For us, its a way to test our knowledge of Scoutcraft, hiking, camping, cooking and survival skills. And more importantly, it gives us some insight into ourselves. Its pretty neat when a 10-11 year old boy actually knows what hes made of. He knows he can co-exist with Mother Nature and not only survive ... but thrive within an environment that harkens back to the 1800s and earlier.
