Going to stir the pot here, but hope this discussion point can continue to push Australian darts. Why are our players used as pawns in the DPA / DFA argument? The answer is they aren’t... We are plebs in the PDC / WDF war that neither side put any interest in to developing, until now. Now the PDC has captured the imagination of the players, those who want to progress their career in our sport are expecting 180 day bans, up to a 2 year sanction. Players representing Australia for 5 days are forced to sign contracts before they can set foot on the plane to represent Australia at the World Cup. Once they get back....then what? What opportunities are DA giving the Aussie side to progress their careers and grow the sport in Australia? So got me thinking..... If I were to become the world number 1, win every PDC title there is, would I still have the passion to play for my state? Without a doubt. I love pulling on the Queensland shirt with all my heart. So now I pose a few questions to DFA / WDF / BDO Why are we signing contracts to participate in your events? You give our players 5 days of play once every 2 years? I can assume players have a fair bit of personal outlay to achieve said honor. How much money are either entity injecting in to these contracted players to build a better future for darts in Australia? What sponsorship dollars are you bringing to Australian Darts? Promotional tours? Advertising? Flat out getting a social media page updated. Where are your promotional tours to bring the best players down here to play a major? Where are your top players to participate in our Pacific Masters? Where are any international players for that matter? (not enough points on it I know) Yet if I were PDC world champion, you would stop me playing for my state? I dare say if Simon were to play for Queensland at the next championships, there would be a media frenzy after the success of the Luna Park gig. Imagine the bragging rights you could have if Simon didn’t win a National title? There is no losing in this scenario. So why enforce sanctions from a governing body that does nothing for us? I doubt they would even notice tbh. DPA / PDC Why no investment in to grass roots? Let’s face it, you hold Australian Darts in the palm of your hand. The second you say so you can bury DA with the amount of unrest among the player base. Why should players be forced in to a decision to follow their passion when either entity could benefit off the back of the others success. DPA’s success in Sydney has the potential to get members in to the DFA run association. More players in the DFA associations will get more people playing opens, including DPA events. So who loses? Right now it’s the players and it seems DPA aren’t fussed who you play for, while DFA are sanctioning players with no real reason apart from WDF having a sook, yet they offer us nothing? Make change now while the hype has the public captivated, don’t waste this opportunity!
