Gold medal match HUN-SRB 7-12 HUN Tibor Benedek, Head Coach: “It was decided in man-ups, mainly. They made the most of it while we missed a handful of shots. Today I can’t say we were on the same level as in our game in the group phase. We were not that hot, or I would say we became too tense and couldn’t play with the same pace. Perhaps it’s the faith of the unbeaten team: to win the Europeans we should have produced now the 7th win in our 7th game, but it was too tiring to maintain our concentration level for two weeks. Our mental strength weakened by the end.” Daniel Varga “It was great to see the applauding fans but I could have imagined an even bigger celebration had we won the title. This didn’t happen, the Serbs were the better side. When we started this cycle we knew they were a cut above the rest – and after two major events I can say: they are still an outstanding team in this field. Yes, I might say we have time to catch them but it doesn’t change my current state of mind: I’m really disappointed.” Marton Szivos: “I would like to congratulate Serbia, but to ourselves as well. I don’t know what happened to us, but – even though it seems to be an easy win for them – it was a great final. We have to analyse this game, there’s a lot to learn from it. Still, we have played to finals in two years, I think this fact speaks for itself.” Márton Vámos: “We didn’t lose because of the audience, that is for sure. We got used to this atmosphere, so we didn’t feel any extra pressure on us today. It was just not our day.” SRB Zivko Gocic: “This medal and this victory go to the people in Serbia that suffered during the horrible floods we had. I hope that the public in Serbia can feel even a fraction of the joy and love I feel right now for my team and my country. I am so proud to be the captain of this team of European Champions.” Filip Filipovic: “Tonight we celebrate for Serbia and the citizens who lost their homes in the floods – with this energy and strength we will rebuild those homes because Serbia is not weak. Today a small group from Serbia showed that they have the strength to be victorious even when it seemed the odds were against them. Water polo is the national sport of Serbia and Margitsziget is the temple of water polo so it was an honour to play here and in front of such passionate and respectful fans. This is not an individual sport and I am merely one of 13 fantastic players. I am so happy and proud to be in this great team.”
