Goldfish Scooping Summer and fall are festival seasons in Japan. On the days called En-nichi, various vendor booth line up in the ground of shrines and temples during the festival, selling local food traditional games and snacks. Goldfish scooping is one of the most popular games during en-nichi. We call it Kingyo Sukui, Kingyo means Goldfish, Sukui means scooping. Rules are simple. Each person scoops goldfish from a pool with a paper scooper called a poi and puts them into a bowl. Poi can tear easily by water you need to scoop carefully and speedy. The game is over when the poi is completely broken or incapable of scooping properly. If some part of the poi is torn, the player can continue the game with the remaining part. If the paper on the poi is only partly wet, it will be easily torn. Whenever you put the poi into the water, make sure you put it in at an angle in order to reduce water resistance. Try to put your poi in the water parallel with the flow. Scoop a goldfish from its head. Try not to let its tail touch the paper part. The movement of the tail might rip the paper. Pull out the poi from the water at an angle and slip the goldfish into the bowl. Usually you can bring back goldfish to home as much as you scoop.
