Good Afternoon Facebook Friends, I posted this morning that we are not allowed to keep birds alive that have one leg and many wondered “why not a sanctuary”. Let me just say, not all rules are bad or not well thought out. These rules are made by people who have many decades of experience and know these types of animals well. A bird missing a part of one leg will end up putting all weight on the other leg, which will lead to chronic bumble foot in the other foot. This is an extremely painful infection and with only one leg to stand on would be continual. This rule is there for the wellbeing of the animals and really should be followed. As much as we would love to save every animal that walks through our doors, we won’t do so if we are simply saving them to a life of pain, we will only save the ones that have a shot at a good life when they leave here, whether that life is wild or captive. Have a beautiful day all!
