Good Directions are Hard To Find by JERMAINE Where do you want to be? This is a question you can attack from multiple angles. From a literal physical location to a metaphysical state of mind, where we want to be can take a lifetime to find. But why? For one, we often don’t know what we want, so, it is impossible to find what we don’t know we’re looking for. I’ve been told this is what youth is for… to unearth our passion. Yet, decades can past with us still trying to figure out who we are, what we want, and where we want to be. By the time we think we know, if we’re not careful, we’ll assume it is too late to pursue our dream and let it die. Of course, this doesn’t outline everybody’s experience of life. Many people early on figure out exactly what they want to do, how they want to do it, and where they want to be. The problem then becomes they don’t know how to get there (wherever there is). So what do we do? Naturally, we ask for help. Some ask parents, some peers, some teachers, and some mentors. We ask in hope of getting directions. Good directions. Thirty years into this thing called life I’m convinced that good directions are hard to find. I talk to people everyday who have been spoon fed perspectives, opinions, and outlooks on life. The jumble of thoughts leaves them paralyzed. I talked to a dual degree graduate from a great college who has zero job offers. He was told his whole life that if he goes to college, works hard, and graduates that there will be companies lining up to hire him. Well, this season has proven that logic to be flawed. When I asked this scholar did he like what he studied sadly he proclaimed, “No.” But he was told that the fields were a “can’t miss” combination. He was coached to look for job security instead of job satisfaction. Now he’s about to enlist in the National Guard. His uncle told him its a great way to “find yourself.” Is he getting good directions? I have a young lady I met that knows exactly what she wants to do with her life. She’s twenty-two and loves helping people. She is fascinated by what makes people tick. She wants to be a social worker. She is currently at taco bell as a manager. She told her parents she wants to get into college and they are convinced that college is a hoax. They don’t want her to waste her time or take out student loans. She admits that she was an average student in high school but in her senior year took a psychology class that she aced. This is what sparked a fire that has kept her reading and doing self study. Yet, she knows this is a field that requires schooling for entrance. Is she getting good directions? It is easy to look at both of these examples and chime in with a ready answer. But what about you? Who’s directing you? Who’s influencing your goals? Are you closer now or farther away from your destiny then you were five years ago? How do you know?
