Good Evening- This morning, the Norwich Bulletin announced that they have decided to not endorse a candidate for the office of First Selectman in the Town of Sprague. Although the endorsement from a local newspaper always serves as “bragging rights” in one form or another, they are not needed to win an election. The choice is for the people to make that decision at the end of the day on the first Tuesday in November. The Bulletin decided not to endorse 19th District State Senator, Sprague First Selectman, and Sprague DTC Chairman Cathy Osten (yes indeed that’s a lot of titles) this year. They stated their main issue with Osten this past year is because she is “hostile” to keeping the public informed through published notices in newspapers. The Norwich Bulletin felt that as a State Senator and First Selectwomen Osten failed, therefor not being able to do this, the Norwich Bulletin will not endorse her. This is one of the only portions of this article that I agree with. Perhaps the Bulletin should’ve elaborated a bit on the fact that Ms. Osten collects a state pension, a salary as Sprague First Selectman, and yet again another salary as State Senator .Why not bring up the past history of nepotism she has brought to this town and well documented politically motivated budget cuts in which I personally know all too much about. David Collins of The Day newspaper did a great job covering this story, it’s a story we all must not forget. You can add all of this to the lack of town meetings, the dismissal of petitions by Sprague Residents, a shrinking general fund and the notion that spend, spend, spend has finally made taxes increase in Sprague and under her leadership will continue. Now, let’s see what the Bulletin wrote about Mr. Meadows shall we? They state that he “does not instill in us the confidence to be an able steward for the town”. They have spoken to Mr. Meadows one time for one hour to question him about his intentions. Mr. Meadows has years of service to the people of Sprague dating back to the 1980’s and they think they have covered the history of his involvement and volunteer service to the town. In the 1980’s Buddy Meadows served as 3rd Selectman in the Delany Administration, forward this to the Allen Administration and then serving under his opponent as 2nd Selectman most recently. He also served in the past on the Board of Education, an eight year term as President of the PTO, and was the co-chairman of Sprague’s 125th and 150th Anniversary Celebrations! Folks, if this doesn’t show his capability to lead this town, I don’t know what else there is to say. This my friends is a short history of the accomplishments of Buddy Meadows and my hope is that in 2 weeks, we can add to his lists of Public Service to have another opportunity to serve the people of the Town Of Sprague. He has never been more enthusiastic and motivated to lead this town into positive change and government for the people, with the input of the people moving forward! I strongly feel and believe that the people of this Town deserve the change that is being presented to them! I hope everyone exercises their right to vote on November 5th. These are the facts and the opinion of Michael Meadows. Sincerely, Michael P. Meadows Campaign Manager Meadows/Blanchard 2013
