Good Morning Devotional Today I will ask you to help me start learning how to live in total freedom from the past. She carefully opened the box and peeled back layer upon layer of soft, pink tissue paper. Nestled inside was the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. It was exquisite—white with satin ribbons that tied in a bow at the waist. When she put it on, it fit as if it were tailor made. Not given to spontaneity or dancing, she nevertheless found herself twirling round and round—until she caught sight of herself in the mirror, light, free, and almost childlike. She stopped immediately, took off the dress, put it back in the box, and slid the box under her bed. She took her old gray dress off the chair, pulled it over her head, and straightened her hair in the mirror. “There,” she said. “That’s how it should be.” But is that how it should be? One of the greatest challenges to living as the women God sees us to be is our very own memory bank. We remember all the poor choices we have made and wonder how our life could have been different. We look back at times when we were not strong or didn’t know ourselves well, and we chastise ourselves for being . . . human. We blame ourselves for things that were not our fault. We play old tapes in which we talk to ourselves in a way we would never dream of talking to anyone else. It’s hard to shake things we’ve believed for many years.
