Good Morning ! Here are todays Fast 5 Headlines ! 1. The Taliban has carried out a major attack on a military-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar. Officials in the area say at least 84 people were killed today when Taliban gunmen stormed the school and began shooting at random. The school has student from Grades 1 through 10, and most of those killed are said to be children. The fighting is said to be ongoing. 2. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is describing the gunman at a Sydney cafe as a deeply disturbed individual known to the police, but he says the man was not on a terror watch list. Fifty-year-old Man Haron Monis and two of his hostages were killed as a 16-hour siege ended early Tuesday in a barrage of gunfire. During the siege, Monis had forced some of his hostages to hold in the shops window a flag with an Islamic declaration of faith. 3. An H-I-V-positive Winnipeg man has been given just short of the maximum sentence for spitting in the face of a police officer. Clifford Bear, who is 44, was convicted of attempted aggravated assault after a lengthy legal battle that spanned several years. Queens Bench Justice Deborah McCawley sentenced Bear to six-and-a-half years in prison, calling his actions a premeditated ambush on a police officer. The officer was hit in the eye with bloody saliva and had to undergo medical treatment. He has since been given a clean bill of health. 4. A new study suggests two of Canadas national passions-- hockey and talking about the weather --were remarkably well-represented in the countrys news coverage this past year. The review by Montreal-based Influence Communication concluded that Canadian media outlets ran 229 per cent more weather stories than the rest of the 160 countries surveyed. And 10 of the top 50 stories in Canada in 2014 were about hockey, while another 11 were about football, soccer, tennis and the 2014 Sochi Olympics. When it comes to what the world read about Canada, it was mostly bad news. Of the top 10 stories about Canada in the international media, the only good-news piece to make the list was the election of former governor general Michaelle Jean as head of the Francophonie. Also this year, Prime Minister Stephen Harper returned to his place on top of the list of Canadians in the media, edging out former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, who dominated 2013 coverage. 5. Finally today....Its one of those end-of-the-year rituals: deciding what artist and albums are the favourites. And even fellow celebrities are willing to get into the act. Just as music critics are giving much love to Sam Smith, so are his fellow celebrities. Actress Uzo Aduba of Orange Is the New Black says Smiths debut album In The Lonely Hour -- as she puts it -- is giving me my life. British singer Ella Henderson says Smith is tops in her book too -- and not just because they are both from the U-K Henderson says Smiths album is phenomenal. Meghan Trainor says her favourite artist for 2014 is Ariana Grande. She says he is able to jam to her album all day.
