Ruiterleft Tofino, BC, June 3rdon a cycling journey across Canada to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. His campaign, Outlive Yourself, has been gaining momentum along the way. Ruiter, an Ottawa native, expects to complete his 8000+ km. quest in about 60 days finishing in St. John’s, NL by early August. The 26 year old will be arriving in Ottawa on Friday and will take the weekend to rest and do bicycle repairs before continuing on to Montreal and beyond on Monday. You can follow Cayse as he cycles across Canada at outliveyourself.caand on Twitter at @OutliveCanada . Hélène Campbell was excited to learn of Ruiter’s journey and will be joining himfor a 9 km spin along the Rideau Canal bike paths on Saturday morning starting at City Hall,Marion Dewar Place at 10:30 a.m. and finishing at the Hog’s Back Park around 11 a.m. The public are encouraged to join in the ride along and/or attend at the Hog’s Back Park ending point where there will be a few brief speakers and presentations. “What Cayse is doing is truly amazing,” says Campbell. “Getting people to talk about and sign up as organ donors are the actions that are going to truly make a difference for the lives of those waiting for organ transplants. This is such an important message. And I am so pleased that Give2Live can team up with him to also raise funds to help with the financial burdens of those waiting for transplants.” Hélène Campbell founded Give2Liveafter herself recovering from a double lung transplant in 2011. The purpose of Give2Live is to raise $300,000 so that 30 patients can access up to $10,000 each as financial assistance while living in the two-hour zone of the hospital while they wait for their transplant. Donations to Give2Live.cacan be attributed to CayseRuiter’s journey under the fund name Outlive Yourself. When asked what inspired this venture, Ruiterexplained, “When my friend Matthew Antolin passed away last December at age 27 while waiting for a heart transplant, I felt an overwhelming desire to do something to honour Matt’s memory and make a difference. So here I am.” Each year over 1,600 Canadians are added to organ wait lists. Eighty per cent of Canadians support organ and tissue donation, yet less than 20 per cent have made plans to donate. Each donor can save eight lives with organs and enhance the lives of 75 others with tissue. Outlive Yourself encourages people to sign up as an organ and tissue donor at cantransplant.ca/organ-and-tissue-donation-consent.php. Even those who have signed an organ donation card may not be properly registered as the lists have all transferred online. All donors are encouraged to confirm their registration. All you need is your health card and about two minutes. “Talking to your family about wanting to be an organ donor is one of the most important conversations you’ll ever have,” explains Ruiter. “Make your wishes known so your family is comfortable honouring your wishes. It’s that easy – talk, share, register.”
