Good Morning ! Let continue with the components of a IEP. The next page is for communication and Assistive Technology. If your child has any type of speech delay you child should be receiving speech and language therapy and this page will simply state yes to the question Does the student have special communication needs? If this question is answered yes the the next statement will state that need as sample child received speech and language services or something similar to that. I want to focus today on the next area titled Assistive Technology . Schools in MD are required by law to see if your child will benefit from AT devices and /or AT services. Yes your child can use AT devices and not receive AT services. Strange but true. The first question under AT will state : The student needs AT device(s) yes or no. If yes AT devices will be addressed through: and it will list different items such as supplementary Aids, services, program Modifications, supports, instructional and testing Accommodations. Then there is a area under this will state Document basis for decision ( s) such as assessments, evaluations and observations. Your child may have the use of low tech items such as a pencil grip, sensory cushion, raised line paper, graphic organizer and visual schedules to high tech devices such as Kurzweil , communication boards and other computer software and anything in between. If your child uses AT devices you child could have gotten these through the school based Occupational therapist and not necessarily the districts AT team. If this happens to be the case you may want to consider formally requesting a full and comprehensive school based Assistive Technology evaluation to see if your child would benefit from additional AT devices and or services. I will now post links to additional information on Assistive Technology.
