Good Morning Tri-Cities! -Mr Ed here with your daily dose of FUN FACTS for this Tuesday July 29,2014! Today we take a look at the wonderful world of marriage.., and in doing so we came across a new and upcoming trend- SKYPE MARRIAGES!! You heard correctly! Not every marriage needs wedding bells. Some just need the chirp chirp of an incoming Skype call! But is this legal? -Yes and No. A marriage where both parties are NOT present before an officiating civil servant or clergy person is not an option in MOST states- but there are 4 states where PROXY MARRIAGES are legal- California, Colorado, Texas, and Montana. A proxy wedding or (proxy marriage) is a wedding in which one or both of the individuals being united are NOT physically present, usually being represented instead by other persons. If both partners are absent a double proxy wedding occurs. So who would be eligible for a SKYPE wedding? In states which allow it, members of the U.S. military who are stationed overseas are allowed to tie the knot via Skype only with special permission from THAT state.- usually with a power of attorney which appoints the proxy. Also, SKYPE™ marriages are used for immigration purposes. Many couples might seek to use Skype marriages as a way to get their new spouse a green card. According to the NY Times, as long as the marriage is legal (either overseas or in the state in which it is performed), the marriage should be recognized for immigration purposes. Of course, a Skype-married couple will still have to go through the green card marriage interview like anyone else. And finally.., a SKYPE™ marriage may not be considered legal in every state! If considering a SKYPE™ wedding, please seek legal advice before doing so! So if a SKYPE™ wedding is an option for you, please make sure you clean the screen before kissing the bride!
